Between the 11th and 18th May the Sutton and Cheam Mace will be on public display at Cheam Library, along with the Mayor’s Badge and Chain of Office.
The ornate Mace is decorated with Tudor rose motifs, leaf and floral decoration. It has an enamel badge with the coat of arms of Sutton and Cheam, which also features on the mayoral badge.
The motto on the coat of arms ‘Serve God and Be Cheerful’ is that of John Hackett, Bishop of Lichfield, who was Rector of Cheam, 1624-62.
Sutton and Cheam was a local government district from 1882 until 1965 when the London Borough of Sutton was created.
